PROJECT 1: LOGO DESIGN= 30% of Final Grade

Week 1 : Choose logo, research company= 5%
A. Introductions – the design process, the first assignment, chose Canadian logos to transform, redesign and reflect contemporary culture and times
B. Assignment
1. Critique the original Canadian logo you have chosen- image, color, type- written in one brief paragraph. Write a rough draft critiquing the original logo and what you would change to make it better and why
2. Make thumbnail sketches of logo chosen and write a rough draft that critiques and begins to describe what changes you are going to make of the original image, type and color.

Week 2: Thumbnails due- logo development in sketches= 5%

1. Continue to refine, reiterate, re-sketch based on crit

Week 3: 2nd Round of Thumbnails due- logo development in sketches= 5%

1. Some approaches/techniques to try:

A. DISPLAY TYPEFACES
Pick different ‘display’ typefaces to replace the original logo’s type. ‘Mock them up’ (via hand tracing or output from a computer or drawing) the new type versions to show how they might look
B. ILLUSTRATIONS
Make by hand (draw, paint, sew, knit or model 3D in wire, clay, architectural foam core, paper, cardboard), that is by any chosen means, NOT computer-derived, 3 different version of imagined logo
C. IMAGED GRAPHIC/SILHOUETTE
Simplify the outline or profile of your new logo by any medium.
D. LOGO-CONCEPT GRAPHIC
NOW design and combine your logo inspired by your references above (2,3,4) maintaining the idea or essence of the original logo
E. LOGO-STYLIZED GRAPHIC
Combine your newly chosen typeface/title (from # 1 above) and your logo-concept (from #2,3,4 above) to create your newly re-created log

D. Assignment:
1. Pick 3 different versions/directions of your favorite logos and type solutions to create 3 rough versions of your now transformed new logo (image and text)
2. Rewrite your rough draft of your critique of your logo and your proposal to make different
3. VISIT LOCATION where logo exists- document with photographs, experience site, observe how people interact with logo

Week 4: Roughs (3) due (4×4” outside square) – showing further logo development in color and larger= 5%
A. Crit of roughs and 2nd draft of crit and proposal (design brief); Show photos and images of actual logo and location. Share observations in group.
B. In class work: Practice Final Presentation with your Logo Group
1. Pick 1 person to speak about history of logo/company (3 min)
2. Each person present and explain their final logo design choice (3 min each)
C. Assignment:
1. Pick 1 version for your 3 roughs and create 1 final color composition.
2. Rewrite critique of the original logo and explain why you designed your new version of
logo (design rationale to include as your individual part of the group presentation)
3. Create a digital presentation (PDF, PPT, Keynote, etc) as a Logo Group and include Individual Logos. Make ONE CD-ROM.
A. Place CD-ROM in ‘jewel case’ labelled with LAST Names, Project 1: Name of Logo. Day and time of class on outside.
B. Label CD-ROM with Logo Name, Day and Time of class
C. Place CD-ROM inside ONE Manilla Envelope (9×12″) with LAST Names, Project 1: Name of Logo. Day and time of class.

Week 5: GROUP LOGO Digital and Oral Final Presentation Due= 5%
A. Presentations by Logo Groups
B. Assignment:
1. Make ‘booklet’ out of ‘bond paper’- thumbs, roughs, comps, finish, and crit
A. Fold 14×18″ pieces of bond paper in half
B. Add ‘cover’ with heavier stock paper, bind or staple together
C. Front cover: label with title “Project 1: Canadian Logo Redesign- Name of Logo”
D. Back cover: Put your name, date, class day and time, student number, email
E. Include design brief as ‘hard copy’ (11 point, typed, double spaced)
F. Place in Manilla Envelope (9×12″) with First & last name, student #, email, Project 1: Name of Logo. Day and time of class.

Week 6: INDIVIDUAL Logo Bond Booklet due for hand in= 5%
Introduction of Project 2: 3D
A. Hand in Logo Booklets
B. Introduction of Project 2: 3D
C. Assignment: Thumbnails of 3D project (2 sets i.e. POP and OBJECT- 9 each)
